If you're ever wandering through Santa Ana with a craving for some truly authentic Mexican flavors, you absolutely have to stop at La Super Birria. Nestled right at 1041 W 1st St, Santa Ana, CA 92703, this spot is a genuine gem that has captured the hearts and taste buds of locals and visitors alike. From the moment you approach, there’s an undeniable aroma that promises something special, something deeply rooted in tradition.

What makes La Super Birria a standout? Well, it’s all in the name. Their birria is the star of the show, slow-cooked to perfection until it’s incredibly tender and bursting with savory goodness. This isn't just any birria; it’s the kind that melts in your mouth, leaving you craving more with every bite. The rich, aromatic consomé that accompanies it is a flavor explosion on its own, perfect for dipping your tacos or simply sipping to warm your soul.

You can’t talk about La Super Birria without highlighting their famous quesatacos. These beauties combine the succulent birria with gooey melted cheese, all cradled in a warm, perfectly grilled tortilla. Each quesataco is a symphony of textures and tastes, a truly satisfying experience. And trust me, the homemade tortillas, or "tortillas hechas a mano," make all the difference. They're soft, fresh, and add an incredible dimension to every dish, proving that attention to detail truly sets this place apart.

Beyond the quesatacos, you’ll find other delights like the classic Birria Plate, offering a generous portion of the tender meat, ready to be enjoyed with their vibrant salsa and chips. The menu keeps it focused, ensuring that every item showcases the quality and care put into their culinary creations. Every bite feels like a warm embrace, a taste of genuine Mexican cooking that feels both familiar and truly delightful.

The vibe here is wonderfully unpretentious and lively. It’s a place where you can relax and savor your meal in a casual setting, surrounded by the joyful chatter of fellow food lovers. You'll often see families and friends gathering, all drawn by the promise of incredible food. It’s a true Santa Ana experience, a local favorite where the focus is squarely on fantastic tacos, birria, and that unforgettable consomé. The atmosphere buzzes with the energy of a beloved community spot, making every visit a pleasant one.

La Super Birria really is a spot that delivers on its promise of authentic, flavorful Mexican cuisine, making it a must-try for anyone seeking an exceptional meal in Santa Ana.

Honestly, this spot didn't quite live up to any expectations. The food was seriously lacking in flavor, just very basic and plain. I tried the torta with consomé, and the horchata water I ordered alongside it wasn't good either. I also got the three tacos dorados, again with consomé and the same disappointing horchata. What really stood out was the pricing; I found it quite overpriced, paying $14 for each plate felt excessive for such uninspired food. There are definitely better places out there that serve authentic birria with actual great taste. To top it all off, the customer service was pretty uninspired as well. So, yeah, it's certainly not "SUPER" in my experience.

My expectations were a bit elevated, and while our experience was generally good, we've certainly had better meals elsewhere. The birria ramen, regrettably, didn't quite hit the mark; the quality of the meat wasn't enough to justify the significant cost, especially considering what felt like pre-made ramen components. We also tried the birria tour, which was passable. I found the seasoning on the tacos rather perplexing – perhaps Tajin or even crushed Doritos? – and the filling itself was merely okay. The taco shells were ambiguous, not clearly soft nor hard. Without a doubt, the highlight of the meal was the consommé, which proved to be genuinely delightful. The inclusion of various accompaniments like limes and raw onions was a welcome addition. The establishment itself seemed to be family-run, but we did experience a considerable wait for our food. Furthermore, the pricing felt quite steep for what was offered, leaving us rather surprised by the final bill. The overall vibe of the place is quite fascinating, featuring an interesting blend of Asian and Mexican candies for sale, alongside seemingly traditional Mexican motifs and outfits adorning the walls, creating a truly unique atmosphere. Their bull logo is ubiquitous, making me question if it's a chain; if not, they've done an exceptional job with their branding.

Paying $17.99 for such a small plate felt quite excessive, especially considering tortillas weren't included and would have been an additional $4. While the food itself was good, the overall value just isn't there when you compare it to the larger portions and better prices available at other places. The photo I shared, even after I'd already taken a few bites, really illustrates the modest size of the serving.
